I did not know this, and I do not know the source to this either, so I cannot verify this information. All I know is that cats were brought to Norway and Sweden during the Viking Age by way of Viking ships, when Vikings found them useful against rodents aboard. Most of the cats that arrived (or else survived) in Norway in the start were of the long-haired kind that were found in the Caspian/Black Sea area and became, eventually, the Norwegian Forest Cat specially adapted to cold climate with its woolen under-fur and waterproof overcoat and big paws. The very late entry into Scandinavian history probably means that the cats of Freyia were a relatively new innovation that happened during the Viking Age, although the myth of her chariot by “big cats” is clearly an earlier adaption of the very old Great Mother iconography so popular during and before the Roman Iron Age - if this was an early adaption we are likely speaking of the only feline in Scandinavia before the Viking Age - the Lynx. And by the way - to say that a woman is flirting in Icelandic is still to say that “she has Freyias cats in her eyes” ;) Anyway cats are really cool ♥
